The Member of Parliament, MP, for Tema West Constituency in the Greater Accra region, Kingsley Carlos Ahenkorah, has entreated resident of Sakumono Village to defecate in the bush until toilet facilities are ready for use.
This followed the agitations and attacks on Queen mother of Sakumono, Naa Borley Wulu II, by the residents who was trying to stop them from open defecation in the bush.
In a pretended attempt to calm the youth of the area down, the MP for the area who is also the Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry urged the resident to rather go far away from the Queen mother’s house to defecate adding that; it won’t pose any health hazard to anyone.
Mr. Ahenkorah claimed he has been appealing for a piece of land since 2017 to build a public toilet facility for the resident but he was unsuccessful.
He promised to collaborate with the Tema West Municipal Assembly to get a piece of land for the intended public toilet for the people to use, meanwhile they could continue to defecate in the bush.
Many the houses in the Sakumono community do not have toilet facilities or latrines for their tenants, most of the schools in the area also lack toilet facilities for students use
In global ranking, Ghana came second after Sudan in Africa in open defecation with 19 per cent of the country’s population resorting to sanitation practices deemed the riskiest of all.
As a result, the country spends about $79 million or more every year to control open defecation which poses one of the greatest dangers to human health, and fatal consequences for the most vulnerable including children.
Research indicates that three out of five Ghanaians practice open defecation and in the last 25 years, Ghana made only one per cent progress at eliminating the practice of open defecation.
