GIS Opens COVID-19 Testing Center

The tape has been cut to Commission Ghana Immigration Service COVID-19 testing Centre at the Headquarters of the GIS in Accra.

Welcoming the guests, the Controller- General of Ghana Immigration Service (CGI), Kwame Asuah Takyi expressed his sincere gratitude to the Interior Minister and other represetatives of institutions and stakeholders to have honoured their invitation.

He further stated that the establishment of the COVID-19 Testing Center has come at an opportune time when a third wave of the virus is feared to have hit the country.

According to Mr. Takyi, this dream has come to fruition as a results of the combination of hard work, determination, coupled with perseverance and intensive discussions with the service’s partners, thus; Vcheck Health Solutions in ensuring that the extent of the COVID-19 is truncated at the work place.

The Controller-General hinted,the service is committed at complementing the efforts by Government at maintaining adequate Human Resource Base at the work place and at all times, ensure not to collapse the public sector institutions such as the GIS and a host of others and also to control the spread of the disease by using the 3Ts approach ie Tracing, Testing, and Treatment.

He described the facility as a stepping stone to a greater project of the provision of health and medical services to all GIS Officers across the length and breadth of the country.

He admonished his fellow officers not to relent on their efforts to protect themselves as well as their relatives from contracting the deadly disease.

Mr. Takyi seized the opportunity to entreat officers to avail themselves for the test in other to make sure they are safe as well as their clientele.

At the tape-cutting ceremony last Friday, at the Headquarters of Ghana Immigration Service, the medical Director of the GIS COVID-19 Center, Dr. Prince Opoku Boateng, mentioned that as part of preparations to have the facility ready for it’s intended purpose, a series of training from various stakeholders including the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), Ghana Health Service (GHS) as well as a medical team from the Noguchi Memorial Institute (NMI) and other stakeholder Institutions. Were organised for the medical staff who would be working in the facility.

” it’s my solemn promise to the GIS and the general public that the center will do its utmost best to provide the best care to all who passes through it”. The Medical Director pledged.

In an interview with the media after the event, Dr. Boateng explained that, the facility currently performs two COVID-19 Tests that is the PCR and Fluorescent Antigen Tests respectively with the results being ready within 15 to 30 minutes for the PCR and about 6hours for the Antigen Test.

He further disclosed that the Testing facility is opened to the General Public as well. Again Dr. Boateng stated that a total of 500 officers from GIS have so far had their samples taken through the test since its commencement.

He seized the opportunity to encourage all Ghanaians especially Officers of the GIS across the country to avail themselves to the testing facility and process when ever the facility gets to their respective regions.

Prior to the Commissioning of the fascility, the registrar of Health Facilities Regulatory Agency (HeFRA) Philip Bannor (MD) presented an authentic health certificate to the Minister for the Interior, Ambrose Dery.

This Certificate authorises the Center to operate as a licensed medical Laboratory (COVID-19 Testing Center) and is free to operate under the provision of the Health Institutions and Fascilities Act, 2011 (Act 829).

Mr. Dery was assisted by the Commissioner of GIS, the Registrar for HeFRA and other Deputy Commissioners of the service in cutting the ribbon to symbolise the opening and Commissioning of the facility.

Addressing the media after the ceremony, the Minister responsible for the Interior, Ambrose Dery, praised the GIS and their health institution partners, Vcheck Solutions for completing government’s efforts aimed at curbing the spread of the deadly Coronavirus pandemic.

He praised the GIS for being responsive, thus; looking at the Personal Protective Equipments (PPE’s) available as well as the processes one has to go through before getting tested.

“Am impressed that you are applying the test to those who are applying for permits, this move will help bring the number of positive cases to the bearest minimum by reducing the importation of the virus through immigrants” Mr. Dery added.

In conclusion Mr. Dery made a passionate appeal to GIS to apply the testing facility to Drivers and Driver’s mates who are into the business of hauling of goods into the country.

This according to the Minister, will enable GIS make sure that they don’t by this window import the virus into the country.

In a related development, the Interior Minister cautioned all perpetrators who uses unapproved routes in getting into this country to desist from such actions since their activities has the tendency of sabotaging the efforts at getting rid of extremists and COVID-19.
