Extend Social Gathering Ban – Muslim Group

A Muslim Group based in Ghana has appealed to the President Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo to extend the ban on public gathering to minimise the spread of COVID-19.

In a press statement issued in Accra, the group, which is made up of some journalists in the country aimed at promoting the interest of the Muslim community in Ghana are of the view that the extension on Social/Physical gathering could curb spread of COVID-19 pandemic in the country.

According the group, it was necessary for them as an organization to add their voice to the call for the President not to lift the ban on social/physical gathering at a time the country kept recording a huge number of corona virus infections which currently is over 7, 600 with about 31 deaths.

The Muslim Group further revealed that Ghana has so far recorded a higher number in horizontal transfer of the Corona virus and has scored first position in West Africa with the highest number of Corona virus and placed 5th position in the whole of Africa.

In their statement, the extreme social-distancing, wearing of nose mask and ban on social/physical gathering are the greatest intervention available to help individuals stay healthy, break the chain of transmission of the Corona virus and to give the vulnerable a more fighting chance of surviving the pandemic, hence the need extension.

“Our checks revealed that the illegal migrants from Niger and other neighbouring countries into Ghana have found their way in some parts of the Muslim communities in the country which is very alarming and has the tendency of spreading the virus” the statement noted.

The group indicated their further checks revealed that those illegal migrants, especially from Niger used trucks loaded with onions and impersonate as drivers’ mates whilst they are not spokesperson for the Muslim Group alleged.

Following this, the group further call on the President to take another look at strengthening the county’s borders, he urged.

The Muslim Group Ghana was also of the view that if the President extends the ban on the social/physical gathering could help prevent Ghana from experiencing higher number of cases in the coming weeks.

The group also thanked President Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his Vice Alhaji Dr. Mahamoud Bawumia for the excellent measures they put in place to mitigate the further spread of the Corona Virus pandemic.

They further extend their gratitude on behalf of the Zongo Communities to the Ministry of Inner Cities and Zango Development for its contributions during the lockdown to the Muslim communities.
