The twelve elected Assembly Members of Krowor Municipal Assembly (KroMA) have secured funding and logistics to help in the fight against COVID-19 in their electoral areas.
The funds and logistics were sourced from Philanthropist and Companies within the Municipality. These include undisclosed amount of cash and foodstuffs including rice, gari, oil, Milo, soft drinks among others.
The move was necessitated by the neglect of the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Joshua Bortey of the elected Assembly Members in the provision of food and other logistics for individuals and homes in the affected areas of restriction.
Although the President announced steps taken by government to help the poor and vulnerable in the affected areas during the lockdown, the MCE have relegated the Assembly Members and is defying the directives of the President.
The President in his address to the Nation on April 5, 2020 indicated the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection and local Government and Rural Development and the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) in collaboration with MMDCEs and faith based organizations would provide food for about four hundred thousand (400,000) individuals and homes in the affected areas of restrictions.
This begun in Accra yesterday and the dry food package and hot meals was expected to be delivered to vulnerable communities in Accra, Tema and other lockdown affected places in Kumasi and Kasoa.
However, the KroMA MCE has formed a secret team unknown to the assembly and empowered them to carry-out the distribution without the Assembly Members.
The Assembly Members challenged to indicate to the MCE, Joshua Bortey that his move was against the directives of the President.
They further stated that the elected assembly members deal directly with the people within their electoral areas since they are in the best position to lead the provision of foodstuffs and other logistics in their electoral areas.
However, the Assembly Members were thankful to the Philantropists and Companies who donated to help fight the COVID-19 in their electoral areas; notable amongst the donors were: Rev. Dr. Moses Ugbonogo, Nii Laryea Botwe (CEO of Liberty Industries, Producers of Kpook3k3), Seth Oman, Paa Nii Agency, Baatsonaa Total, All Purified Water and King Solomon.
